Furlong claims distress, embarrassment, and loss of income

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – He’s suffered distress, embarrassment, and a loss of income.

Those are the claims being made by John Furlong, in his legal action against a controversial newspaper story.

The court documents have now been released and outline the case being made by the former 2010 Olympic boss, who denies allegations of abuse against students during his time in Burns Lake in the late 1960’s.

The notice of civil claim outlines a series of denials which Furlong’s representatives are said to have made in the months before publication of a Georgia Straight story.

Once the article was published, Furlong again rejected allegations.

Furlong is suing journalist Laura Robinson, the company that runs the Georgia Straight, its publisher and editor.

Although the document doesn’t indicate how much money Furlong is seeking, he is asking for damages, as well as an apology and retraction.

Since the Georgia Straight’s article was published in September, the newspaper has stood by the story, although it is now declining to comment.
