VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The number of pedestrians killed in Vancouver is at the highest level since 2008 despite a pedestrian safety plan launched last year to cut down on the number of deaths.
The plan looked to educate people about road safety, it also saw in increase in police traffic members during peak times.
Vancouver City Councillor Heather Deal says efforts have been working in terms of raising awareness but she admits there’s still more work to be done. “We really need to look at our infrastructure and how we plan it in terms of ensuring it’s very very clear when drivers should expect pedestrians and that pedestrians use those clear and safe paths to get across roads.”
This morning marked the 18th pedestrian death in Vancouver. A woman was struck by an SUV while trying to cross the intersection of Joyce Street and Kingsway Street last night. Yesterday an elderly man was killed when he was struck at East Georgia Street and Renfrew Street.
