People are legally lighting up spliffs this morning across Washington State.
If you’re 21 or older, smoking pot is now allowed – except in public places – however, police say they won’t be ticketing anyone.
Eric Heintz with KOMO NEWS says you can’t sell it, but that could change in a year.
“If you want to purchase marijuana you’d have to do so at a place that’s actually licensed by the state of Washington. That means that right now the only way that you can purchase marijuana is from someone who is a dealer,” says Heintz.
“You can legally have one once of marijuana that you can use recreationally for yourself. It’s legal to use it, to carry it, to possess it. It is not legal to sell it.
Marijuana Crusader Jody Emery says the border is already strict but you can expect things to get a lot tighter.
“We could see a tougher clamp down because Harper and the Conservatives and it seems the BC Liberals don’t really care for pot at all, and are definitely cracking down,” explains Emery.
“Right now the border is already pretty tough, Canadians who are involved with marijuana get hassled at the border, I know quite a few people who do experience a hard time coming back home.”
It’s not just illegal taking it into Canada — you’re also not allowed to bring it over state lines because possession is still a federal crime.
