Shell Canada promising to fix overcharges

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Shell Canada is coming under criticism over its handling of a glitch that resulted in people getting overcharged for gas last week.

If you gassed up at Shell last Thursday and Friday, you may want to look at your bank statement.

For instance, one woman who shared her story says she pre-paid for $50 but ended up filling her vehicle with $47 worth of gas. When she looked at her bank statement, she saw she had been charged the full $50.

“You know what, I won’t be going back to that Shell,” says the woman, who doesn’t want to be identified.

Shell is acknowledging the problem and says it occurred at a number of its pumps last Thursday and Friday.

Before now, Shell’s only mention was a tweet that advised debit was down at the pumps.

SFU Marketing Professor Lindsay Meredith says that’s not good enough. “One lousy little post on Twitter does not constitute acknowledgement that you had overcharged customers.”

Shell is promising to fix any overcharges.
