VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver Police are worried about a Twitter account that’s gaining momentum that warns drivers about roadblocks.
@RoadblocksBC has almost 4400 followers and although it urges you to not drink and drive, those who tweet to the account often give away the location of where officers are set up.
VPD Social Media Officer Anne Longley says the tweets are interfering with what they’re trying to accomplish.
“The roadblocks are there for the safety of everybody, and for us to take those off the road who shouldn’t be behind the wheel. It is so easy on Twitter to share information, and you don’t really know who is going to be seeing the information. I think a lot of times the people tweeting the information are not thinking of the consequences.”
She paints a picture of the harm that can be caused by accounts such as this, by asking people to imagine a detailed scenario.”If someone tweeted about a roadblock, and a driver saw that tweet and purposefully avoided it and ended up killing or injuring someone as a result.”
RCMP told News1130 last year that they were not worried about the tweets.
