PORT MOODY (NEWS1130) – Classes will resume as normal tomorrow at Aspenwood Elementary after it was evacuated today.

Cheryl Quinton with the Coquitlam School District says it started with a couple of students becoming ill during class. “What happened was, during a singing class one student fainted and shortly thereafter another did. It’s not highly unusual in a school setting for a fainting to occur now and then, however because there were two of them the principal wanted to exercise caution and called paramedics.”

The two were taken to hospital as a precaution. Quinton says a short time later, another handful of students started to complain about not feeling well.

“Some other students in proximity started to feel light-headed and in all, by the end of the session, eight students were impacted by this, the two fainting, six feeling light-headed and one staff member. They all ended up going to hospital to be assessed,” she explains.

The fire department asked for the school to be evacuated and students were sent to a nearby field. Hazmat became involved and completed a thorough air quality test. The results have come back clear.

Quinton says the incident seems to have been a one-off. “It seemed to be. There was no, from the air quality testing, no environmental issues that were found.”

Students were sent home by 2 p.m. as a precaution and to allow hazmat crews to conduct the testing.
