Flooding at Surrey Memorial hurts charity drive

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The flood at Surrey Memorial’s ER department also had an impact on a popular Christmas charity drive; it put a bit of a damper on “Operation Backpack.”

“We need some winter jackets and winter footwear. We are very short on that this year,” says Forensic Nurse Aimee Falkenberg, explaining they weren’t able to put out community donation bins because of the damage and interruptions.

“We actually have a bin at the Charles Barham Pavilion that is connected to Surrey Memorial Hospital and that’s where people are able to donate,” she tells us.

They now only have until December 16th to gather everything they need. Typically, a few hundred backpacks full of winter gear and other necessities are collected for Surrey’s homeless.

“They are so humble and so gracious and they are so shocked with how many people show up and everything that they receive,” says Falkenberg.

The project is now in its seventh year.
