VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A man is in custody after a series of assaults in Vancouver sent three women to hospital. One of the victims is an elderly woman who is now fighting for her life.
The woman, who is believed to be in her 70s or 80s, was attacked on Columbia near Cordova Street at around 9:30 a.m. Police say she has life-threatening injuries. Officers are having a difficult time identifying the woman.
“She had one silver and one gold ring on her left hand on separate fingers. She was wearing a jade bracelet on her left wrist and a silver bracelet on her right list,” describes Cst. Brian Montague.
A second woman was attacked about 20 minutes later on Pacific Boulevard, by BC Place. Police say she is in hospital, recovering from her injuries.
A third women who was attacked across the street just a few minutes later is in grave condition.
Montague says a man was arrested a short time later. “He was taken into custody not too far from the scene of the other two attacks. It’s my understanding that he was in his underwear when we arrested him.”
The VPD Major Crime Section have yet to identify the man they have in custody, but they don’t believe he’s known to the victims.
