PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – Hundreds are expected to take a stand against bullying this Sunday in Port Coquitlam.
The Snowflake Walk is being organized in memory of Amanda Todd. The teen took her own life in October after going on YouTube to detail how she was tormented, becoming an international focal point for the anti-bullying movement in the process.
“We are calling it the ‘Snowflake Walk’ because Amanda was my ‘Princess Snowflake,’” explains her mother Carol Todd. “That’s a nickname that I started to call her about eight months before her death.”
The walk supports the city’s recent “Be Someone” anti-bullying initiative; it’s also aimed at raising funds to increase resources in the community. But Todd says the event isn’t just about raising money, at least not for her.
“Personally, for me, it’s to raise awareness of the bullying aspect. Bullying shouldn’t take place and [Amanda] had to endure quite a bit of it,” she tells us.
The walk happens Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., starting at the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex. Registration begins at 11 a.m.
