VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Transit Police say they haven’t forgotten about U-Pass fraud.
Investigators are having a hard time keeping ads for the discount student passes off online resale sites.
Transit Police Cst. Anne Drennan says as soon as they take one ad down from a classifieds website, another one pops up. “It is difficult. There’s a lot of work that goes into tracking these people down and actually speaking with them and determining what the circumstances are. It’s something that is an ongoing problem for us.”
“We have made arrangements with the largest of these sites to monitor them closely and to flag ads that are placed on the site and to remove them as soon as they possibly can,” adds Drennan.
If you’re caught buying or selling a pass like this, you could be fined or criminally charged. A big crackdown in October has led to a court date.
“That party will appear in court on Dec. 14,” confirms Drennan.
