VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Pedestrian safety is on everyone’s mind with so many people being hit crossing the streets around the Lower Mainland. The BC Coroners Service is out with a warning that the worst is yet to come.

On Wednesday night alone, seven people were hit around the Lower Mainland, and while none of those were fatal, there have been 13 pedestrian deaths around the province in the last five weeks.

Lisa Lapointe with the BC Coroners Service says the majority of these fatalities were in marked crosswalks. “That was what surprised us; how many of the pedestrians who were killed had the light. You know, they had the right of way at the intersection and they were still being struck by cars. It just speaks to being defensive all the time.”

She adds we are on pace for one of the most deadly years for pedestrians, and worries we are just entering the most dangerous months of the year. December and January usually account for 25 per cent of pedestrian deaths.
