KELOWNA (NEWS1130) – Crown prosecutors in BC’s Interior say they’re considering seeking dangerous-offender status for a chronic crook who sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl.
Douglas Leighton has been convicted of sexually assaulting the teen in his car after giving her the date-rape drug GHB in Kelowna in September 2011.
The 46-year-old has 33 prior convictions, including two robberies, assaulting a police officer and counterfeiting
He’s expected to be sentenced in the new year, and Crown counsel David Grabavac says prosecutors are considering whether to have Leighton assessed to determine if he qualifies as a long-term or dangerous offender.
If he receives such a designation, Leighton could receive an indefinite sentence.
The court heard Leighton gave the teen GHB after she asked him for drugs and then assaulted her, while Leighton’s lawyer insisted the sex was consensual and he wasn’t aware of the girl’s age.
