NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Good news for the owners of that Bernese Mountain dog that has been stuck in a gully on Mount Seymour for the last 12 days.
Ohly is now safe and sound and is being checked over by vets.
North Shore Rescue was first called to the mountain on Thursday, after the dog was spotted by a ski run. But Ohly wound up in a gully and refused to respond to the promise of food or calls by his owners.
Finally, there was a breakthrough Saturday afternoon.
“We were having major problems getting this dog. It went onto a cliff, a banned area. It was totally at risk. We were able to get it to moved uphill and exhaust it with 12 personnel. They recovered the dog. The dog is safe and sound,” says the rescue unit’s Tim Jones who stresses the group is covering the cost.
“I want to emphasize that North Shore Rescue is paying the bill for this rescue, for the helicopter.”
The true cost of rescuing the dog could be in the $5,000 range. Ohly’s owner Alyssa Goad wants to be able to repay the unit.
“We were informed that we’ve completely blown the bank on what donations have come in so far and to cover the cost of this we’re going to need more donations.”
The dog, in the meantime, seems to be in good condition.
Veterinary technicians will now be looking after the dog to check to see what kind of injuries it suffered while on the mountain.
Meanwhile, North Shore Rescue volunteers were also called out to retrieve a man who had fallen into a muddy creek embankment at Hollyburn Ridge, on the North Shore.
It appears the 27-year-old suffered a heart attack. Two snowshoers also helped out in the effort.
The man was eventually airlifted out by helicopter.
