Tourists will be charged for crossing new Port Mann

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – British Columbians won’t be the only drivers paying off the new Port Mann Bridge.

TreO is expecting to collect the tolls from out-of-province drivers.

If drivers don’t have a TreO decal, a picture is taken of their license plate and linked to the registered driver.

Max Logan with the tolling company says they’ve been testing the system all week and everything is ready to go.

“The tolling system is able to identify both the characters on the license plate, as well as the jurisdiction for the license plate, so identifying the appropriate province or state will be no issue what-so-ever.”

He says other cities that use the same tolling technology don’t report problems getting out-of-province drivers to pay.

“The experience in other jurisdictions, is that the vast majority of visitors will voluntarily pay the toll, provided that they’re aware it’s a toll crossing and you provide them with convenient ways to pay.”

Logan says that includes paying online, through a mobile app or visiting one of the TreO tolling offices.
