Don’t leave your animals in Delta

By

DELTA (NEWS1130) – Delta is the latest municipality to introduce an animal abandonment bylaw.  It’s something the BC SPCA hopes will spread throughout the province.

This comes after parts of Delta became overrun with bunnies in 2011 and the municipality is now looking to ensure the feral animal population doesn’t grow to a point where it’s impacting public health and safety or damaging property.

Five other municipalities have a similar bylaw in place including Coquitlam, Victoria, Prince Rupert, Nelson and Golden.  Coquitlam has issued six tickets in the last year and says it’s working.

Geoff Urton with the BC SPCA says it’s an unacceptable practice.  “Hopefully it will deter people from what we see a lot of which is people abandoning their rabbits in places where they’ve sees other rabbits.  It’s really inhumane and irresponsible.”

If caught in Delta, you’d face a $500 fine.  That would be reduced if you pay within 30 days.
