Truck traffic numbers across new Port Mann stable

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – There were concerns about more heavy truck traffic in New Westminster before tolling began on the Port Mann, and drivers are telling us they’re noticing a difference in the Royal City now that tolls are in effect.  But the latest numbers regarding truck traffic on the new span appear to be stable.

BC Trucking Association President Louise Yako spoke with Transportation Investment Corporation, the Crown company behind the Port Mann/Highway 1 project, and got some traffic-count numbers specific to semis, from before and after the beginning of tolling.  “November 26th is 5274, November 27th 5854,” she says, referring to daily totals.  “December 10th was 5376.”

Yako says “a huge number” of trucks was counted on December 11th, but TI Corp. believes there is a flaw in the data for that day.  The specific number wasn’t given.

Yako also wants to point out that these are the early days following the start of tolling, and the true impact of the new bridge will not be known for some time.  “And the other part of this whole equation is the South Fraser Perimeter Road which is not going to be fully open until the end of 2013,” she adds.  “So the full picture won’t come out for quite some time.

SFPR is an 80-kilometre route along the south side of the river, connecting Deltaport Way in southwest Delta with 176th Street in Surrey, with links to several major highways and the Golden Ears Bridge.  It will also connect with the Patullo between Surrey and New West.

Yako says she has asked trucking association members for feedback about the new Port Mann, but has nothing to report at this time.
