VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some neighbours aren’t happy about it, but all four HEAT shelters for the homeless are now open in Vancouver.
Councillor Kerry Jang says most of the 40-bed facilities are already full.
“We’re already started to have some success stories,” explains Jang.
“For example, one person came in and got into contact with a social worker and we were able to get that person in touch their family back east. They’ll soon be flying home for Christmas.”
A group of people who live in Yaletown have raised concerns over the facility at Seymour and Davie, particularly about drug use.
“There’s a perception that [the people who are staying in the shelters] are drug addicts,” says Jang.
“Actually, we have people who are waiting for the disability cheques to come and we have people in recovery who are just looking for a warm place to go.”
As a precaution, there is a security camera at the shelter.
