VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The family of the woman hit and killed while walking home in East Vancouver has been overwhelmed with generosity from the community.

But the woman’s husband will have to return to work soon and he is still worried about child care for his daughter.

Nilo Tumanda says his 4-and-a-half-year-old keeps asking for Mommy and pretty soon her dad will have to go back to work.

He is thankful that people have offered to donate to her funeral costs this Friday, but he admits his family is struggling to come to terms with the fact that the driver still hasn’t turned themselves in. “That is my main concern, if there are any witnesses to the incident.”

“What happened to my cousin is very traumatic and a big loss to my family, especially to Nilo who will raise his daughter alone,” says Cherrie Adano, the cousin of Leonida Tumanda.

Leonida’s father has also flown in from the Philippines.

Epitacio Jimenez, speaking through a translator, says he is struggling right now after just losing his wife in September. “These things that have happened to me are very cruel. I feel like I have been dealt a very cruel hand by fate. I’m very worried about my granddaughters future and also what may be in store for my son-in-law.”

Vancouver Police say the investigation is ongoing, but that is little comfort to the family.

Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at any TD Canada branch. Branch #9466, account #6345314.
