Woman dies after vehicle veers off highway into lake

VERNON (NEWS1130) – A woman has died after her vehicle veered off Highway 97 and went into a lake between Kelowna and Vernon.

RCMP said the driver died despite rescue efforts by witnesses and emergency personnel.

It’s not known what caused the Jeep to go off the road or if other people were inside.

The highway was closed for several hours as police and the coroner’s service investigated.

Cindy Rogers was driving by Wood Lake on Wednesday when she saw the accident and went into the freezing water to try and rescue whoever was in trouble.

Rogers said she felt she had no choice but to help.

My utmost respect for the Good Samaritan Cindy Rogers. Sad to see a flood of negative comments on all sorts of other stories but no one stop by to say thanks to a kind-hearted, brave passerby – she’s probably beating herself up for not being able to save the victim, but Cindy, please know that your thoughts and effort definitely counts.
