As I write this my cousin’s daughter lies quietly. Alone. Lifeless. Needlessly. With the knowledge of what happened during her final moments of consciousness seared into her brain. The RCMP will investigate thoroughly, no doubt, but the results of their efforts won’t bring her back to life. Nor will it ease the pain of a grieving family. We live in a world where violence, be it in thought, deed, or language used, is increasingly commonplace. How many more young women across Canada will die tragically, or simply disappear, in the coming year? I don’t have the answer – none of us do. Rest in peace, dear April. Vichnaya Pamyat.
