Canada tops Sweden in World Juniors tune-up

HELSINKI, FINLAND (NEWS1130) – Jonathan Huberdeau and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored in the shootout to lift Canada to a 2-1 victory over Sweden in its final tune-up game for the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship. Canada finished its pre-tournament competition with a 1-1 record.
Alexander Wennberg put Sweden on the board first with a powerplay goal just shy of the 10-minute mark in the first period.
Canada would equalize late in the second period, when Jonathan Drouin beat Joel Lassinantti on a breakaway out of the penalty box.
Canadian forward Boone Jenner was ejected from the game midway through the second period when he received a major penalty and a gross misconduct for charging. Swedish defencemen Jesper Pettersson had to leave the game as a result of the hit. He reportedly suffered broken ribs.
Jordan Binnington had a fantastic outing in the Canadian goal. He turned aside 59 of the 60 shots he faced in regulation and overtime before stopping two of three Swedish attempts in the shootout.
Canada lost its first tune-up game 3-2 to Finland. The team opens up its tournament on Boxing Day against Germany.
