Many disgusted over Luka Magnotta making top newsmaker

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Many Canadians are reacting in disgust and anger after news editors and directors surveyed by The Canadian Press chose the story of alleged mutilation murderer Luka Rocco Magnotta as newsmaker of the year.

The alleged killer — now in a Montreal detention centre — was the subject of a global manhunt last spring after a Chinese engineering student was killed and his body was cut up.

Remains were mailed to four different locations in Ottawa and in Vancouver.

The event, including Magnotta’s capture last June at a Berlin internet cafe, was splashed across newspaper front pages and websites.

Canadian Press managing editor Scott White points out that the newsmaker can be any story that gets wide play, good or bad.
