VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Luka Rocco Magnotta is the suspect in one of the most disturbing murder cases in Canadian history — grabbing headlines all over the world.

It all started when Chinese exchange student Jun Lin vanished in Montreal back in May.

A janitor found Lin’s torso in the trash in Montreal and the story became more bizarre, twisted and horrific by the day.

Lin’s hand and foot were mailed the offices of political parties in Ottawa and soon after Commander Ian Lafrenière with the Montreal police said got their hands on what they believed was a video of the killing and dismemberment of Lin.

Lafrenière said the suspect, Luka Magnotta was nowhere to be found. “We know he left Montreal to a destination in Europe.”

Gradually we learned more about Magnotta, a former gay porn actor and people who knew him said he loved attention. Police eventually found him in an Internet cafe in Berlin. The mystery was far from solved.

It took a sickening turn in Vancouver on June 5. “Human remains were discovered in separate packages, mailed to two local area school this afternoon.” VPD Deputy Chief Constable Warren Lemcke announced that a human hand and a foot, later identified as Lin’s, were mailed to Saint George’s School and False Creek Elementary.

Then, on July 1, police found Lin’s head in a park in Montreal.

Magnotta is now back in Montreal, where he has pleaded not to first degree murder.

He’ll be back in court in March.

Over the weekend Magnotta was chosen as “Newsmaker of the Year” by the Canadian Press — creating a certain amount of criticism from many Canadians.
