TORONTO (NEWS1130) - Burnaby’s Christine Sinclair has earned another year-end honour. The Canadian womens soccer captain has won the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as The Canadian Press female athlete of 2012.
Sinclair, Canada’s all-time scoring leader was the top scorer at the London 2012 Winter Olympics, helping Canada to a bronze medal, Canada’s first medal in a traditional team sport since 1936.
Sinclair had a hat trick in Canada’s heart-breaking 4-3 semifinal loss to the United States. The Burnaby South High grad and former Vancouver Whitecap women’s star has won nearly every athlete of year award in Canada this month.
Trampolinist Rosie MacLennan was a distant second in balloting among sports editors and broadcasters from across the country. MacLennan won Canada’s only gold medal at the Games. Long-track speed skater Christine Nesbitt was third in the voting.

Why are we rewarding poor sportsmanship and a bronze medal? There were athletes that won gold at the Olympics.
A handball is supposed to be called when intentional. Clearly it was not intentional. The ball struck the arm, the player did not move the arm towards the ball. The distance of the player to the ball must also be considered.

I agree with several of the posts. Christine Sinclair showed her lack of maturity and professionalism with her outbursts during and after the game. FIFA did the right thing by leaving her unsportsmanlike name of the final ballot. It is amazing how people believe her actions were warranted, actually it disgusts me. She showed a blatant disrespect for the game. Regardless, of people thoughts of the call that was made, the game does not allow or have room for the disrespectful behavior that is shown. While, everyone is making excuses for her, it is her actions that show our youth players that it is alright to disrespect officials if you disagree with an officials call. You can berate and make unsportsmanlike comments and it is alright, because officials have it coming. That is why officials are at their lowest levels ever. Absolutely shameful. It is a sad day for Canada, that there is no other female athlete who has respect for her sport and has not been penalized for showing unsportsmanlike behavior, like Christine. It is true, if Christne believe that her actions were right and sportsmanlike than she would have appealed. Instead, she did the right thing cause she was WRONG and took the suspension.
