Teen tries to keep up with freeway traffic on side street

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A 17-year-old girl was only able to enjoy her “N” licence for two weeks, after she was caught going 117 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone.

The interesting thing about this story is the Abbotsford teen’s defence.

“[It was] essentially that she thought the posted speed was higher and she was trying to keep pace with nearby traffic,” explains Constable Ian MacDonald.

“The unfortunate thing is ‘nearby traffic’ is the freeway. She was on a residential and park road that parallels freeway traffic,” he tells us.

But MacDonald adds that unlike a driver accusing police of discriminating against blonde people in the area last year, this driver accepted responsibility. “Given that that’s an excessive speed, there was nothing at the end of the day that was going to prevent either the laying of a pretty significant ticket or a vehicle impound for a week.”

“Unfortunately for her, the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles will be aware of this situation and in all likelihood, she won’t be driving again anytime soon.”
