Many teens think cigarettes should be banned indoors: study

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – More young people feel there should be tighter controls on smoking, even in your own home.

A new survey suggests most teens would like to see cigarettes eliminated indoors. Ironically, the figures comes out of a major tobacco producing state: North Carolina.

The folks with a tobacco prevention program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill asked thousands of middle and high school students about butting out at home and in cars. About 80 per cent said they would support it.

Researchers say young people are aware of the harmful effects of exposure to second-hand smoke and they understand the benefits of smoke-free policies.

US figures show smoking rates among teens have fallen by half since the 1990s, when they were skyrocketing. Experts say increasing taxes and the declining number of places to smoke are having a positive effect.

In 2009, it was made illegal to smoke in a car in BC if kids under 16 are present.
