BC NDP keeping lead; Liberals gaining support: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC’s top two political parties can claim positive news from the latest poll: the New Democrats maintain a healthy lead while the Liberals are slowly gaining.

The Angus Reid poll shows the BC NDP have a 15-point lead over the governing Liberals, at 46 per cent support. The BC Liberals are up two points at 31 per cent.

Mario Canseco with Angus Reid says Liberal gains come at the expense of the Conservatives.

“Now we see some of those BC Conservative voters slowly coming back to the BC Liberal fold. Ultimately, they need all of those voters if they want to catch the NDP,” he explains.

However Canseco says the Liberals, if they want to win another term, will also need to regain supporters who are turning to the NDP.

Adrian Dix is favoured over Christy Clark in a number of categories, which Canseco says makes it hard for the current government to make headway.

“You’re trailing on health care, on crime, on the environment, on education. You’re not doing that well on some of the issues that you used to own, such as the economy. So, it’s a difficult scenario for her,” he tells us.

The NDP have been above 45 per cent since last spring, while the BC Liberals have gone above 30 per cent for the first time in more than a year.
