SFU celebrates Robbie Burns Day

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Simon Fraser University is showing off its Scottish roots, by celebrating the birth of Robbie Burns with a marathon poetry recital.

Tricia Barker with SFU’s Centre for Scottish Studies says they hope to set a new world record.

“Last year, the record was four hours, 12 minutes, 27 seconds. This year, we’re going to go for over five hours. We know we will be able to have enough readers to go until two o’clock and the way it’s going, we might be going a little later than that.”

This year’s readers include local astrologist Georgia Nichols and Christopher Gaze from Bard on the Beach among others.

A Robbie Burns’ birthday party isn’t complete without haggis.

“Guts, and things that people don’t normally eat. It’s cooked up with oatmeal spice and a little bit of onions, things like that, to give it flavor. It’s cooked in a sheep’s stomach, and it’s cooked for a long time,” says Director says Leith Davis.

Some really enjoyed the Scottish treat. “It’s nice. It tastes like oatmeal, like meatloaf, kinda crunchy and chewy,” says one woman.

For others, haggis didn’t do much for the taste buds. “I don’t know, I didn’t like the taste,” says one boy.

Burns’ describes haggis as “warm and rich.”
