Deadly police-involved shooting in Burnaby

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A man is dead after he was shot by police in Burnaby early this morning.

The Independent Investigations Office has been called in. It says the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. when police were called to a report of a man with a knife on Albert Street at Gilmore.

“While the RCMP was enroute to that location, it’s my understanding the officers encountered a fellow who matched the description that was given by the original caller,” explains Owen Court with the IIO.

“There was a shooting and the gentleman was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter,” he adds.

Court notes the IIO has a team of seven members working on the case. “They’ll look at any available evidence that’s there and they’ll speak to… both civilian witnesses and police witnesses.”

He adds he’s not sure how long the investigation will take.

Hastings between Gilmore and Ingleton Avenues was closed for hours; it has since re-opened. Follow @News1130Traffic for updates.
