Deadly police-involved shooting in Burnaby

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A man is dead after he was shot by police in Burnaby early this morning.

The Independent Investigations Office has been called in. It says the incident happened around 1:30 a.m. when police were called to a report of a man with a knife on Albert Street at Gilmore.

“While the RCMP was enroute to that location, it’s my understanding the officers encountered a fellow who matched the description that was given by the original caller,” explains Owen Court with the IIO.

“There was a shooting and the gentleman was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter,” he adds.

Court notes the IIO has a team of seven members working on the case. “They’ll look at any available evidence that’s there and they’ll speak to… both civilian witnesses and police witnesses.”

He adds he’s not sure how long the investigation will take.

Hastings between Gilmore and Ingleton Avenues was closed for hours; it has since re-opened. Follow @News1130Traffic for updates.

A Deaf guy? Reeeeally? Wielding a knife at 1:30 AM after being stopped by police? Do you honestly think a deaf person would not understand to drop the knife? Deaf people have heightened awareness of non audible cues, and even those not highly skilled with lip reading would understand DROP THE KNIFE or the word’s I’LL SHOOT. If I had a domestic dispute and was stopped by police with guns drawn while I was waving it around, I think I’d pick up a cue or two to drop the knife, even if I was deaf.

The only possible explanation is suicide by cop or someone that was so mentally deranged or so high that he didn’t have his faculties about him, in which place he got what was coming or what he wanted anyway.
