Gregor Robertson chimes in on poodle art debate

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver’s mayor is wading into the debate over a piece of public art in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

At issue is the seven-foot-tall poodle perched on a 25 foot pole at the intersection of Main and 18th Avenue, which cost $100,000.

@MayorGregor has tweeted: “Definitely not a fan of the Main St. poodle but public art is important and at times provocative!”

We hit the street to find out what you think of the art; opinions were mixed.

“I’m not a big poodle fan, but I guess it’s alright,” says one Vancouverite.

“It’s a waste of money,” says another. “There’s a lot better things to be spending your money on than a $100,000 poodle.”

“I think it’s bad timing with how the Waldorf closed. They have that and people are up in arms and then they’re like, “Oh, by the way, here’s this $100,000 poodle we put up outside your place!'” notes another passer-by.

“It’s done, and at least they spent the money on a Canadian artist doing some kind of art project,” says another man.

The dog even has its own Twitter account. You can follow it @MainStPoodle!
