VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says Family Day is a holiday for most, but it’s an inconvenience for many.
It wants to see the province kick in with a Family Day Tax Credit.
Mike Klassen with the CFIB says the province needs to mitigate that cost.
“Perhaps offset it by helping us with perhaps around simplifying the rules around PST for example. And cutting red tape, that’s the way you can help small businesses. At the end of the day, this is really money out of their pocket,” he says.
Klassen says only a quarter of small businesses support the day off, a number that would rise to two-thirds if the government helped out. “For the vast majority of small businesses, it’s a day off or it’s time that they’re going have pay additional costs to staff and unfortunately it’s a burden they’re going to have to bear.”
It’s turning into one of the more controversial days off in this province.
Klassen says that burden is $1,135 for a business with less than five employees.

It sounds like the NDP and its supporters are just looking for another reason to attack the Liberals. Everyone is quick to complain, that the stretch between New Years and Easter is too long and that the people of this province deserve a holiday, but they are quick to complain when it is given to them. Who cares and why does it matter that the holiday does not match other provinces.
It’s everyone and anyone who is just not a Liberal supporter, which, by the way is the majority of people in BC…
I firmly believe that business should be SHUT DOWN on holidays except for vital services. Like how it used to be on Sundays in Canada. That was great! That was family day! This is a joke! There needs to be a day everyone is at home together! No wonder the current society is a train wreck!
As much as I like to shop and go out to restaurants on stat holidays (as I did yesterday on Family Day), society would probably be much better off if we just toned down the rampant consumerism a bit.
all this extra whining from businesses because of ONE DAY that eats away at their profit only futher resolves my weekly trip to the States to shop.
it’s ONE extra day out of the year, for most of us to relax and spend time with our loved ones (or whatever else), and businesses have nothing better to do than to complain about their profits being eaten into.
Well, how about those businesses that might be getting more customers than usual on monday because some people might decide to do some shopping on their extra day off? Why aren’t they opening their lips?
Hypocrits. “Buy Canadian, keep it in Canada”.. lol. sure.
As a small business owner I find your unintelligent rambling offensive. For a lot of small businesses its a struggle just to break even each year, so when something like this comes along, it makes things that much tougher. I don’t begrudge my employees the time off, but its a big expense to have the extra stat holiday. Some people think that small businesses are some sort of money printing goldmine. That’s simply just not the case. So we aren’t whinning about our “profits” getting eaten into.
Canada Post does not honor Family day as they are a Federal Corporation so expect your mail to be delivered.
I think the employees of Canada Post got ripped on this one.
Canada Post does not recognize Family Day because it is a newly created holiday in the Provincial jurisdiction. How do you shut down the federal postal service in just BC? They don’t shut it down in other provinces when they have Family Day. Also, their contract does not recognize new holidays, unless their bargaining agent wants to switch BC day for Family Day, but that is up to the Union. They just signed a new agreement – if they wanted the holiday, they should have bargained for it, but they didn’t.
Its not because its a newly created holiday.
Its because they are registered under the federal law. Many industries are within that category. Media is actually one of those.
Actually, it is because it is a newly created holiday. Canada Post recognizes at least one civic or provincial holiday on top of the federally regulated holidays. In BC, this is the civic holiday in August. As it is new, it is not recognized in the various collective agreements that Canada Post has with its employees. As it stands now, it may be possible to have family day off in the future, however, the employees would have to give up the civic holiday in August to do so. As I mentioned above, the largest Union failed to bargain recognition of this new holiday in the recently signed contract. That is why CPC does not recognize this new BC holiday.
Telus is also federally regulated, so no Family day in BC. They get it off in Alberta though for some reason.
Businesses should be closed if it is a True Holiday
I think you said it perfectly and you are probably in the minority as far as small business employers go.
There is a big problem with businesses in general….greed. Sure they cry the blues about not making money these days because of the downturn in the economy but the truth is they are making money, just not as much.
