Ottawa Mountie facing child abuse charges

By

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – An Ottawa RCMP officer is accused in a disturbing case of child abuse.

A 41-year-old Mountie has been arrested on several charges of assault, along with a 34-year-old woman.

Police are releasing little information about the details of the accused or the victims.

Acting Staff Sgt. François D’Aoust wouldn’t give a number but says there is more than one child victim. “Just given the number of charges laid, it is a very serious offence that we’re investigating.”

“Any incident involving children is an awful incident and it affects officers throughout their work life,” he continues.

The accused Mountie is now facing an RCMP code of conduct investigation.

RCMP spokesperson Lucy Shorey says he isn’t on the job. “I can tell you that he hasn’t been on active duty since May 2011. As of yesterday he was suspended with pay.”

Shorey says she can’t get into the details on why he hasn’t been on active duty since 2011.
