Port Moody School mural ready to be enjoyed

PORT MOODY (NEWS1130)- Students and staff at Port Moody’s Heritage Park Elementary School are once again able to take pride in their mural.
It took eight months to raise the almost $4,000 needed for supplies and to bring in a local artist to help students of a select class paint the mural last June.
They were stunned when it was defaced with Graffiti on Feb. 7.
The teacher who came up with the idea wanted to beautify the school and thought it was the perfect opportunity for students to get involved.
Principal Craig Mah says the blow to morale when it was destroyed was significant.
“What we hope is that the people responsible for it know the impact that it had and that it’s not a faceless crime and that it did upset quite a few people,” says Mah.
The school is in the midst of lobbying and fundraising for a new playground and is selling calendars with images of the mural to help efforts. That meant funds to repair the damage were scarce but, a small unused contingency fund was available and the original artist graciously donated her time to help restore the mural’s lustre.
“Our contingency fund is small so we don’t have a lot more money for more repairs,” says Mah.
It also helped that most of the damage was done to a one-colour part of the mural and, as of Friday afternoon, the mural was once again graffiti free.
