Tomorrow’s budget won’t be truly balanced, claims BC NDP

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The government is pleading poverty as the BC Liberals prepare to table their budget tomorrow, ahead of the election in May. But Opposition leader Adrian Dix isn’t buying the finance minister’s claims that there just isn’t any cash left.

Dix says he believes the government will do anything in its power to present a balanced budget, even if the books don’t support one.

“Clearly, it’s not going to be a real balanced budget. The government is selling assets desperately this year to serve the political prospects of the Liberal party and I think that’s too bad for the long term of the province.

The Vancouver-Kingsway MLA points to BC Hydro as example of where the province might pull funds from to balance this year’s budget.

“They’re trying to take profit from BC Hydro and obviously, BC Hydro is getting a billion-dollar loss because of Liberal policy. It’s unfortunate.”

He feels voters are upset with the Liberals’ constant attack ads; the NDP is introducing a bill to prevent governments from using public money for that sort of thing.

“What we’re doing is proposing something substantial: an actual law that says no to this kind of wasteful election advertising    … the Liberal party [is] spending money like there’s no tomorrow no itself,” explains Dix.
