SURREY (NEWS1130) – Smokers will be fined if they are caught puffing outside of the hospital in Surrey.
The city has passed a new bylaw to strengthen enforcement.
Fraser Health’s existing no-smoking policy doesn’t include fines, but the new bylaw does.
Roy Thorpe-Doward with the Heath Authority says right now, hospital security guards can only tell smokers to leave the property. “The city of Surrey approached us with a plan that they could look a bylaw that prohibits smoking on hospital property and help us with our efforts.
He says a plan is being made that will see City of Surrey bylaw officers visiting the hospital as part of their regular patrols.
Fines will range from $250 to $2,000.
