Former UN gang member sentenced for 2004 murder

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Justice nine years later for the family of a man murdered in Vancouver’s West End.

Michael Newman, a former UN Gang member, has been given life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

He’s behind the gruesome murder of Marc Rozen in 2004.

Rozen was selling an $18,000 ring on craigslist and Newman, the buyer, brutally attacked him in his West End home.

Rozen’s father Jack is relieved the proceedings are over — adding he’s no longer angry. “And we thank God for the fact that we had a son for 38 years. That’s what’s going to carry us through for the rest of our lives.”

He says Newman’s true crime is depriving the world of an honest, loving young man. “I had these horrible thoughts about this man, but then we started realizing that he was really not important anymore. I know Marc, my son, would not have wanted us to spend the rest of our lives being angry.”

Asked if he had anything to say to the court, Newman insisted he did not kill Rozen.
