Crown may seek dangerous offender status for Martin Tremblay

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There are calls for a man to be declared a dangerous offender, after he was convicted in the deaths of two girls who overdosed on a mix of drugs and alcohol.

A packed Vancouver courtroom erupted in applause after a judge found Martin Tremblay guilty.

The judge has found Tremblay showed “wanton and reckless disregard” and convicted him of criminal negligence causing death and obstruction of justice.

The two teens had been invited to party with Tremblay, a previously convicted sex offender who knew the girls.

At Tremblay’s home in Richmond, he gave 16-year-old Kalya Lalonde and 17-year-old Martha Jackson alcohol and powdered methadone.

Eventually, the girls passed out and could not be revived.

Kayla’s mother Angela is relieved Tremblay has been convicted. “It’s been really hard, this whole trial, everything. I’m just glad he’s finally convicted.”

The family wants Crown to seek dangerous offender status against Tremblay.

Crown’s Neil MacKenzie says they’re now looking over their sentencing options.

“Certainly, a dangerous offender application is within the range the Crown will be considering, but a final decision has not been made on that as yet.”

The case returns to court March 6 to fix a date for sentencing.
