Avalanche warning is up for all local mountains

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The wet, stormy weather is making for a potentially dangerous weekend in the mountains.

The conditions have created one of the most extensive avalanche warnings in years.

The high-danger rating includes the North Shore Mountains, Sea-to-Sky country and the South Coast area that includes the Coquihalla.

Canadian Avalanche Centre forecaster Joe Lammers says it’s because of a lot of new snow and heavy winds.

“Because of the wind, the snow has a lot more rigidity to it and more destructive potential as well. We’re urging people to take caution now and chose more conservative terrain.”

Lammers suggest that anyone heading into the mountains this weekend stick to dense forest and make sure you have the proper equipment. “If you’re going for a snowshoe, I would stick to really tight dense forest. More than anything, I wouldn’t go in avalanche terrain without the right rescue gear, at the very least an avalanche transceiver and a probe and a shovel.”
