VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There are reports the land which the recently closed Kitsilano Coast Guard Base sits on could be up for sale.
Confusion over who owns that property continues to grow.
A leaked federal memo last week suggested that the waterfront property is being shopped around.
Ottawa says the land doesn’t belong to the feds, it is owned by the province.
Vancouver city councillor Kerry Jang did some digging. “As far as I have been able to ascertain, the land is titled as federal crown land with an address in downtown Vancouver given for the DFO.”
He is disappointed there hasn’t been any talk with the feds from the start, everything from the abrupt closure to who owns the land.
News1130 has put in a call to BC’s Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resources to find out if the property is provincial crown land.

Umm, I own it. Cheque please.
Thanks mean Gene, those links are useful and back up my suspicion that it’s indeed a contaminated site. Which means the Feds are on the hook to clean it up before any sale, likely wiping out any profit from selling it.
It was a DND site in WWII, it was taken over in 1964 by the Department of Transport which took the station, crew and boats to help form the newly created Coast Guard. Most of the site is foreshore and is likely considered a contaminated site since the fire and DFO required them to build an artificial reef when rebuilding the station in the 90′s. Previous to this attempt, Coast Guard management tried to shut this base down twice before and even tried to shut the hovercraft base as well. Why they would want to shut the 2 busiest bases in Canada is beyond me, but you can see the calibre of advice the government is getting.
The KIts station is Federal Crown land:

I think I can settle this. I own it! I’ll be at the land title office first thing in the morning. If those two idiot governments don’t want to claim ownership, then it must be up for grabs, right?
