BC Place may host Heritage Classic game next year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – According to online hockey magazine The Fourth Period, Vancouver is one of two Canadian cities being considered to hold the Heritage Classic.

It’s usually held outdoors, so our stadium would work if you opened the retractable roof.

News1130 Sports Director Ann Schmalz understands the NHL would want to do this to help recoup some of the losses from the lockout.

“I’m a fan of one outdoor game, and that’s on New Year’s day, and that’s usually out east between two Eastern teams. I’m looking forward to the one between the Red Wings and Toronto. I think too many of them and it gets to be a spectacle and takes away from the game.” says Schmaltz. “However, take that out of the equation, if an event like that were to come to BC Place, I think it would be a great boost, economically, for this city.”

Schmaltz says Vancouver has proven we can host world class events. “The Olympics, the Grey Cup, so it would be very interesting to say the least.”

Edmonton is the other city said to be in the running for the Heritage Classic, although it hosted the game back in 2003.
