Man gets driving ban and a fine for fatal collision

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A man accused of driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a 25-year-old man in Burnaby has been found guilty of driving with a blood alcohol level of over 0.08.

The judge feels there isn’t enough evidence to prove 63-year-old John Davidson was driving while impaired though.

In 2011, Matthew Beaver was walking along Lougheed Highway near Phillips Ave. when he was hit by Davidson’s pickup truck and died at the scene.

Davidson has been given a two-year driving ban and a $2000 fine.

Beaver’s best friend Matt Preissl says he wishes Davidson would have turned around in court and issued an apology to the family.

“You can tell the guy is remorseful but $2000 for someone you care and love about, two years without driving– that’s a load of crap if you ask me,” explains Preissl.

Davidson says he hasn’t driven since the crash and has no plans to ever again.

“I spoke to him, I can see he’s hurting, but you drank, you drove, and you killed somebody.  Man up and go to jail,” says Preissl.

The family is still having a hard time dealing with the fact that Davidson was only ever charged with these offences.
