Controversial vaccine symposium on today in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A controversial symposium is being held today in Downtown Vancouver by a group calling itself the Vaccine Resistance Movement.
Vaccine Summit: Vancouver 2013 is raising concerns among some of the province’s leading health care professionals, including Dr. Monika Knauss with the BC Centre for Disease Control.
She says the results should speak for themselves, pointing to a decade’s worth of studies discounting the links between vaccinations and autism.
“Everything from basic biological studies to ecological analysis to epidemiologic studies that have not found an association between vaccines and autism,” she tells us.
She also doesn’t find the event particularly helpful at a time when only two-thirds of children in British Columbia have their vaccinations up to date.
“Unvaccinated children continue to be at risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, both within the country, but also when they travel because, with the exception of smallpox, vaccine-preventable diseases have not been eradicated.”
Today’s symposium at SFU’s Downtown campus runs from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
