BC film industry sees increase in spending in 2012

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – 2012 was an okay year for the BC film industry, but the numbers mask the deterioration of the industry’s biggest sector.

The provincial government says spending on all types of film production rose more than two per cent last year, topping $1.2 billion.

But the biggest spending is by foreign, mostly US, producers. It sank nine per cent but was overcome by a 55 per cent spike in Canadian productions, especially for TV.

And the outlook remains grim, with BC not matching other provinces’ increases to their subsidies and doing away with the industry-friendly HST.
