Save On Meats being targeted by anarchists: Owner

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The tug of war between businesses and activists on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has taken a strange turn.

It looks like some self-styled anarchists have stolen a sandwich-board sign belonging to an iconic neighbourhood business.

Save On Meats owner Mark Brand took out his frustration on social media last night.  He posted a picture on his Instagram account of the sign sent to him by one of the anarchists he claims took it.

Brand writes, “These anarchists stole our sign.  Yes I’m serious.  They won’t stop until the capitalists leave the neighbourhood.  I’m serious.  They will be embarking on a mission to close save on meats.”

He goes on to say, “Help me find it and spread the word fast. I’m serious.”

Brand also appeared on Breakfast Television on City this morning to call out his detractors and have them meet him face to face.  “It’s a constant bombardment from Internet people, but nobody ever comes to challenge me in person and I’m really easy to find.”

The group has put out its own statement saying, “We will not stop.  We will take their property apart bit by bit if we have to, and we’ll have fun doing it.”

They accuse of being an entrepeneurial voyeur, but Brand maintains he is making a positive difference in the neighbourhood.  “We feed 80 people a day, minimum, out of that window in the diner.  I thought we might do five or eight; [it’s more like] 80 to 120.”

This is just the latest episode of theft and vandalism against area businesses.

The Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria on Commercial Drive was hit for a third time by vandals earlier this week and the Pidgin Restaurant continues to be a lightning rod for protesters as well.
