Group in Langley not happy about blueberry cannons

LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – Imagine waking up to cannon fire at 6:30 every morning.

A Langley group brought a noisy protest to an event with the premier this afternoon. Blueberry cannons meant to keep birds out of fields are keeping people up at night, at least according to Kevin Mitchell with www.banthecannon.com.

“I have actually reported one of these cannons going off at 4 o’clock in the morning,” he says. “I’ve had to bring out the RCMP and that’s actually happened multiple times.”

With the cannons firing hundreds of times a day, worsening with a growing blueberry industry — he says there must be better regulations.

“Essentially what they allow is for these cannons to fire up to 333 times a day,” he adds. “So that’s 111 triple shots starting at 6:30 in the morning and finishing at 8 o’clock at night, with a three hour noon time break.”

Mitchell brought a blueberry cannon to an event with the premier at a Langley golf club, firing several shots to the dismay of some area neighbours and reportedly against the wishes of the RCMP. Afterward, he quickly loaded up the gear and drove away.

Christy Clark says she never heard the protest, drowned out by a noisy luncheon.

Clark adds while she sympathizes, further regulations are a matter for Langley Township, not the provincial government.
