Local realty group ordered to pay for firing pregnant worker

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A Fraser Valley real estate company has been fined for laying off a pregnant receptionist.

The province’s Human Rights Tribunal has ordered the company to give the woman $9,000.

Kamalpreet Dhillon was hired by Planet Group Realty to work in its Abbotsford office in early 2011. By mid-March, she announced she was pregnant, and less than two months later, she was let go.

The company argues she was laid off because of performance concerns, but the Human Rights Tribunal found no evidence that Planet Group formally shared those concerns with Dhillon.

The tribunal says performance may have been an issue, but so was her pregnancy.

Planet Group has been ordered to pay Dhillon $3,000 in lost wages, and $6,000 for injury to dignity, feelings, and self-respect.
