Save On Meats countering anarchists with kindness

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – After getting targeted by anarchists, a Downtown Eastside diner is countering with even more community outreach. About two weeks ago,a sandwich board at Save On Meats was stolen by anti-gentrification protestors.

Bar Manager David Truscott still feels the sting. “It’s frustrating — as we call it, ‘sign gate’ — the whole thing is very unfortunate but we’re trying to put a positive spin on it.”

Now the shop has a new sign up, complete with a protestor wearing all black and a balaclava with a face cut out. It’s meant to mimic people who stole the business’ sandwich board.

He’s encouraging folks to come by to help them raise funds for the community while making a statement. “Anytime you take a picture with the sign and upload it to any of our social media sites, we’re going to donate breakfast to the Rainier women’s shelter.”

The restaurant is trying to turn a negative into a positive.

“I feel we’re doing a lot of good with our various programs down here and being in the heart of it, I can see we’re really feeding a lot of people that really, really need it in the community,” says Truscott.
