Canucks clinch playoff spot with win over Wings

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Cory Schneider made 33 saves in 65 minutes of play and three more in the shootout as Vancouver edged Detroit 2-1. By getting the game to OT, Vancouver secured a berth in the post-season.

Vancouver’s Alex Edler opened the scoring with his eighth of the season with a low blast on a first period power play.

Detroit’s Cory Emmerton replied with 21 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

The Red Wings, who sit ninth in the Western Conference,  picked up the pace in the third period out-shooting the Canucks 17-2.

Max Lapierre scored the only goal of the shootout on Jimmy Howard in the third round.

With Kevin Bieksa and Chris Tanev already out with injuries, Keith Ballard left the game early in the third period and did not return for Vancouver. Coach Alain Vigneault did not seem concerned saying Ballard tweaked his back in a second period fight with Justin Abdelkader.

The best team in the NHL, Chicago, will be at Rogers Arena on Monday.
