VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Mayor Gregor Robertson, meet Homeless Dave.
“Homeless Dave” is on Day 33 of a hunger strike; the only thing he has had to eat or drink is Happy Planet Juice, which was co-founded by Robertson.
Homeless Dave is trying to raise awareness for social housing, but the gesture hasn’t caught Robertson’s attention.
So, Homeless Dave is now taking his campaign to the next level: sitting outside of Robertson’s home for at least an hour every day.
“We delivered a letter about 18 days ago, but we’ve heard nothing,” Wendy Pedersen with Homeless Dave’s team tells News1130.
“We haven’t even been acknowledged. At the same time, we’ve met with everyone, Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu, NDP MP Libby Davies, NDP MLA Jenny Kwan, and city councilors from the other parties — not Vision Vancouver.”
Pedersen says Homeless Dave has two major issues.
“To get 100 per cent social housing at the old police station, which is just sitting empty… It’s city owned and they want to turn it into a high-tech business centre. The other is to get social housing at a condo lot on Hastings Street.”
Homeless Dave also wants to see the Downtown Eastside turned into a social justice zone.
He dropped off a list of demands on Robertson’s doorstep yesterday. He also left an organic avocado as a gift.
