Tax deadline panic lessens as more people file online

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Tax deadline day isn’t what it used to be.

The Canada Revenue Agency feels there is less of a panic this year thanks to more people filing their taxes online.

Fewer people are lined up in front of their accountants office these days according to Dave Morgan with the CRA.

“It has been increasing over the years nationally. This time last year roughly 71 per cent of individuals filing their returns electronically, this year we are up to 80 per cent.”

He says that has equalled less stress for some of the procrastinators out there.

“It’s fast, it’s secure, it’s simple. Individuals can file electronically, they get their return process quickly and if they are expecting a refund they will get that quickly.”

If you have a tax balance owing for 2012 and you do not pay it by midnight, you will be charged compound daily interest of five per cent, starting May 1, by the CRA.
